The Following Day
At Laura’s home
Laura’s mom paced round the room in search of nothing. She stood akimbo and stamped her feet several times.
She had not gotten over the shock of what happened the other day. Her husband had told her the call she got was probably her imagination. That statement infuriated her because she had the number in her call history for a proof.
Even though she had tried calling the number several times and it was not available she was certain she wasn’t hallucinating.
Laura’s absence had caused a huge scar in her heart but she wasn’t crazy.
Nevertheless her proof was baseless since the number wasn’t available.
She took a glass cup and got herself a chilled water from the fridge. She was sweating under AC ( air conditioner)
She had tried to eat the meal Priscilla had cooked in the morning but she had lost her appetite. The food was on the Table waiting to be consumed.
Laura’s mom forced a smile when her husband came in.
“Darling how are you?”
Her husband asked.
“I am fine thanks.”
Laura’s mom replied.
She was surprised when her husband’s face changed at the next moment.
She realized he had seen the food on the table.
Laura’s dad stood up from the chair and held the food on the table with his hands .
“You told me you would eat this food when I wanted to go out in the morning didn’t you?”
“Yes I did but I..”
Laura’s mom struggled with words.
“You aren’t the only one who has been affected by Laura’s absence. I am affected Priscilla is heartbroken too. We are all in this together. The situation won’t get pleasant if you continue to starve yourself like this. Lastnight you didn’t eat and now you don’t want to eat. How do you intend on staying alive to see Laura again? Do you think Laura’s joy will be complete if she comes back and meet you on a sick bed? Moreover I told you to have full faith in me didn’t I? Will your starving bring Laura back ? If it would she ought to be here by now. You aren’t planning on starving yourself to death? Or are you?”.
Laura’s dad asked at once.
Laura’s mom kept mute. Her husband went closer to her and she bursted into tears.
“Laura is my only child after so many miscarriages. You know I haven’t been able to take in ever since I gave birth to her. This pain is too much for me I can’t bear it anymore. Maybe God is punishing me because I haven’t been able to spend time with Laura like I ought to. I have been chasing money round the world , now the money I have acquired can’t even bring back my daughter.”
Laura’s dad looked at his wife with a pitiful face and gently sat her down on the chair.
“I am sorry if I raised my voice at you. Please what happened to Laura isn’t your fault don’t ever think that way.”
Laura’s father said after he sat his wife down on the chair .
His wife nodded her head and wiped the tears on her face with an handkerchief.
“I am only trying to stand strong I am deeply affected by Laura’s absence too. I haven’t forgotten the pains you went through in the past before you took in. I haven’t forgotten the sorrow you felt when you thought you had taken in again only for the red dot ( menstruation) to show up. I haven’t forgotten everything. I only want you to have faith in me. We will scale through this. I don’t want this to affect your mental health . Moreover I told you I have hired a private investigator he is the best in the city and the accolades he has gotten so far from home and abroad prove he is. As a matter of fact he was recommended to me by a close friend. I have a feeling we will see Laura and it’s soon. Please cheer up.”
He patted his wife on the back.
Laura’s mom gave her husband a sheepish look and collected the food he had taken from the table in his hands.
She ate the food slowly , it took her an hour before she was through with the meal. After she was through she took water from the fridge and rested her head on her husband’s arm.
She was dozing when her husband got a call. Her husband took his phone from his pocket and answered the call. It was the private investigator.
“Hello sir how are you?”
“I am fine thanks.”
“Good. I have an interesting Information to share.”
“Alright go on . Am listening.”
“The call your wife got the other day is valid. According to my findings Laura was seen in a car with a stranger the day your wife was called. I don’t know if the stranger with Laura was the one who called your wife but my instincts tells me he is. I will advise you to be vigilant henceforth sir. I will call you when I have more information . Take care sir.”
“I will. Thanks.”
Laura’s father opened his mouth in shock. He couldn’t keep the information to himself so he woke up his wife with a tap on her shoulder.
“Darling I am sorry I interrupted your sleep. I apologize if I doubted you the day you got the strange call.
The private investigator just called me now and he said the call you got was valid. Laura was in a car with a stranger the day you were called.”
“Wait you mean the private investigator just confirmed it.”
“Yes he did dear. I assure you we are closer to finding the truth.”
“Oh! Heavens. Laura was the one who called me mom from the entrance. I can’t believe I was closer to finding my daughter and I slipped.”
“I don’t understand you. How was Laura able to call you mom when she isn’t here with us?”
Laura’s father asked with a puzzled look.
“The day I got the strange call. I heard mom when we wanted to go back in. Remember I turned back that day. I don’t know if you noticed?”
“Yes you did. “
“My poor daughter. Laura must have been helpless that’s why she called me at the top of her voice. Oh! I have failed her cry for help. I couldn’t rescue her.”
“It’s not your fault darling. Please don’t talk like this.”
“Then it mean the man and the woman who stood in my way that day was only to distract me. The strange call wasn’t to get me to see my daughter. I don’t know the intention of the call but am positive it wasn’t to give me information about my missing daughter.”
“Oops whatever this is we will find out soon.”
Laura’s father replied and he’s wife forced a smile.
At the hospital
Louis’s POV
Louis’s face looked colourful and bright as the day. He wore a smile as he stared at Laura’s picture.
Louis father had given the picture to Louis when the doctor told him Laura held a key to Louis’s recovery.
Since Laura wasn’t available the doctor told him Laura’s picture would help in Louis’s recovery as an alternative to her presence.
Louis’s father had halted his business transactions after what happened to Nicodemus.
Nicodemus had told them everything that had transpired between him and Laura in the past.
His parents were dissapointed he could do such to his elder brother all because he wanted to keep Laura.
Poor Louis who was in the dark and didn’t know anything about what had happened to Nicodemus asked his father why Nicodemus had not come to pay him a visit recently.
“He’s been busy at work these days. Don’t worry he will pay you a visit soon.”
Louis’s father lied.
“Alright I miss his company.”
“Really? Do you remember anything about him?”
“Not yet I have been struggling with memories . The only constant face that shows up in my head is that of lolita. I saw her clearly today in my dream . Laura is her name. Lolita is a pet name I gave her . I am not even sure of what am saying now. Never mind I don’t want to disturb you with my hallucinations.”
“Son you aren’t disturbing me and yes what you just said is the truth you aren’t hallucinating. Lolita was the pet name you gave to Laura , she was a lady you held close to your heart. My only wish is you find the light soon.”
Louis closed his eyes for some minutes to see if he could remember something but he couldn’t.
He shook his head and stared at Laura’s picture again.
