Things continued to drift apart between Nkem and her husband. He was doing everything to get her to forget what had happened, but she was failing to get herself to feel same way for her husband again, even when she was trying so hard to do so.
She was also too anxious about the pregnancy result Farida was supposed to get to enable them move to the next stage, because her mother in-law and Martha seemed to be intensifying efforts to get Joe accept Martha as a wife in deed.
One morning, Nkem had just come out from the bathroom and was dressing up when her mother in-law and Martha barged into her room to tôrment her.
“Mama, you could have at least knocked before getting in, I could have been nàked you know!” Nkem complained.
“Sorry Sir, but I’m sure neither of us would have been moved by your nakedness if we had seen you naked.
“I am way past having feelings if I see a man nàked, and Martha here, is married and certainly won’t care about seeing you nàked. She’s too dedicated to ensuring that I have my own grandchildren to car about another man being nàked!” she told Nkem cruelly.
“Oh mama, I almost got lost there! You’re very funny, but a firm realist. She is nothing but a man actually, because I don’t see why a man can live with a woman, making love to her every day, yet she can’t allow just one, out of the millions of his progenies that he sends inside her produce results” Martha said, laughing hysterically.
Nkem looked at them and wiped a tear from her left eye, determined no to let them see her cry again.
“Mama, since you have told me why you’re here, can you leave now?” Nkem asked, breathing heavily.
“I didn’t come here to be asked out by you Nkem, I came to ask you out of this room to allow the new wife an opportunity to get pregnant.
“Why are you this cruèl? What did I do to you in the past life to deserve this decision to ensure that I dîe without a grandchild?
“How can you keep staying in this room ridding Martha the chance to get pregnant when you know that all the nights of sëx here with him, would amount to nothing?” her mother in-law said harshly, making Nkem turn around and ran into the bathroom.
Her husband appeared all of a sudden and if he hadn’t been so disciplined and very respectful to his mother, he would have thrown her out of his house that moment.
“Mama, you’ll leave my room now, and never try this kind of thing with my wife ever again.
“I have tried not to be too hard on you mama, but if you’re going to make my wife never be happy with me all her life, then I’m going to ensure we all remain sad.
“Please leave now and don’t make me have to kïll someone’s daughter and get ready to go to jail mama.
“By the gods, if Martha comes into this room again, I’ll shock the whole world” Joe was still saying when they heard the door bell chime.
Martha rushed to get the door, always wanting to present herself as a madam in the house, and not a stranger, only to find Farida and Mandy at the door.
“We’re here to see the owner of the house and his wife, would you please help us get your employers” Mandy intentionally told her, making Martha feel like choking life out of her.
“I know who you are pōor woman. And I know you’re here again to ask your friend for crumbs to feed your dozen of bàstards, but I’m going to let you in, because I want you to witness what I’m about to do to her now” Martha said, turning around to get back inside.
Joe and his mother had just come out of the bedroom and were still arguing about Mama’s accusations that Joe had become so disrespectful to her because of a woman, who couldn’t even bear him a child.
As soon as Joe stepped into the sitting room and saw Farida and Mandy sitting there, he paused abruptly, nearly having a heart attàck.
“Erm… Mandy, you’re here? Please come with me, I need to talk to you” Joe stuttered, trying to see how he could get them out of the house before his wife came down.
“Joe, I’m sorry, but I’m too upset to wait a moment longer before I let you know that my daughter has been rejecetd by her fiancé because you’ve impregnated her.
“Yes! My daughter didn’t know a man before I allowed her to pass the night with your wife, only for you to smuggle her into your arms, made her a woman and went as far as impregnating her in a go” Mandy said, looking very upset.
“Calm down my daughter. Did you say she’s pregnant? Joseph made her a woman and impregnated her?” mama asked, her eyes twinkling in delight.
“Yes Mama. He did all of that, and now the man who’s meant to marry her has found out that she’s pregnant.
“He has not only broken their engagement, he doesn’t want anything to do with her again. So my daughter is going to bear a child outside wedlock” Mandy said, and began to cry.
“Mandy, don’t tell me Farida got pregnant from that accident, is she truly pregnant?” Nkem asked, walking down the stairs and trying to appear shocked and angry to match the script Mandy had created for her, and to ensure her husband didn’t have to deny Farida in his mother’s presence.
“Wait Joseph, did you truly go to bed with this beautiful damsel here? Did you touch her?” mama asked, holding her heart to contain the excitement.
“Yes Mama,but it was a mist…” he was still saying, but his mother had cut him short.
“Thank you gods of our land. Thank you my ancestors” mama screamed as she knelt down in thanks to the gods, before she turned around and addressed Mandy.
“It’s okay my in-law. You can stop crying. I know we all didn’t plan for all of these, but the gods have already known from beginning that we’d be in-laws, that’s why they allowed you, a very fertile woman, to be friends with someone as infèrtile as this” she said, pointing at Nkem.
“Mama, now isn’t the time to get petty and make innuendos that aren’t needed.
“This girl is pregnant and that has ruined her chances of getting married to her fiancé and I have to think of what to do about the situation” Joe’s said
“What is there to think about? She’s pregnant for you, and available for you to marry, since she has no man claiming her, so you marry her immediately” mama said enthusiastically.
Mandy looked at Joe, then at Nkem before she spoke again, liking the way Martha was finding it hard to breathe.
“For the first time mama, I think you’re right. But what do you think Nkem, I know all these hit us all in different ways, but I can’t have my daughter nursing the pregnancy in my house when she’s unmarried. My husband will kïll us both!” Mandy explained
“It’s okay Mandy. I accept that he marries her, and I will also allow her share my room with me, to show how much I accept her and hope that perhaps, her luck can bring me mine” Nkem said, making her mother in-law snort.
A week later, Farida was not only traditionally married to Joe, Mandy had insisted that they got a court marriage too.
Joe had become helpless, because aside the fact that he didn’t want the shame that’ll go with the scàndal of someone of his caliber impregnating a little girl, he was secretly beginning to yearn to hold his child in his arms.
Farida moved into their house and chose to stay in Nkem’s room as she had offered, only, her mother had made her ensure that Nkem didn’t have to stay in that room with her.
“Aunty, I’m not so sure I’d be okay with both of us living in this room because I do not want uncle coming in here because of you, and finding me nàked or not properly covered.
“So if I have to stay in this house, I’d like to stay in this room, and I’ll want to stay alone” Farida told a shocked Nkem.
She moved out of her room and had to take one of the rooms in the basement because her mother in-law had taken the only room left, after Martha and taken the one closest to her room.
Nkem was gradually becoming a stranger in her home because every now and then, her mother in-law would literally yank him out of her room to go take care of Farida who could either be throwing up, or running temperature.
“It’s only going to be for a little while girlfriend. When Farida passes this first trimester of pregnancy, she’ll be less dramatic.
“I know you don’t understand, but when a woman is pregnant, a lot of hormones get crãzy, and that woman may begin to crave for things she never liked in the first place” Mandy told her when she met with Mandy and Jackie to complain about how her husband now doesn’t even come to her room, but stays all day with Farida.
“You didn’t have to say that Mandy. The fact that she hasn’t experienced early pregnancy symptoms doesn’t mean she doesn’t know when a girl she brought into her house is now trying to keep her husband for herself, which isn’t what you said was going to happen from the start” Jackie said àngrily.
“If I had known this clown was going to be here, I wouldn’t have bothered to leave my beauty sleep to come over. I’ll see you later Nkem, I have an appointment with my spa” Mandy said and picked up her handbag to leave.
“Ah yes Mandy the mother in-law of a millionaire. You can now have appointments with the biggest Spas in town and as well have orders from the biggest designers’ vendors in town, but I won’t stop saying it, because I knew from the start that you’re êvïl” Jackie shouted at her disappearing figure.
“Talk to my as$” Mandy said, and got into the new Range Rover Jeep she had Joe buy for her, the very week her daughter moved into his house.
