“Where does this boy live?” Joe asked between clenched teeth, succumbing to his wife’s pressure, and doing exactly what she wanted.
Nkem smiled happily, and gave out all the information she had on Max, then Joe and Ben went to work.
Amarachi was very happy to see that Ben and his brother were already getting along so well, she could tell that it wasn’t going to be a big deal to get her brother to accept him, when he finally proposes to marry her.
“But wait a minute, why hasn’t Ben made any move all these while to show any form of commitment towards me?
“Could he truly not be interested in me, or is it just because of the pressure of this Mandy’s tròuble and how it can affect his job and life?” Amarachi thought, frowning unhappily as she sat there, listening to Ben and her brother talk.
She made an excuse to go into her room after mama had also gone into her room to rest, because she suddenly became very moody, when she thought of how he hadn’t made any move to even as much as ask her properly,to be his girlfriend.
When Ben finished his planning with Joe, he went up to her room to ask her out, on a date he had been planning and replanning for so long, but a look at her, and he could tell that something was wrong with her.
“Amarachi, are you okay?” He asked, and she said she was feeling unwell.
“I was hoping you and I could go somewhere today, you know, sit out for a while and talk about one or two things.
“Why do you suddenly feel unwell on a day like this?” Ben asked her, looking sad.
Amarachi couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“Ben wants to take me out on a date?” she thought, a smile crawling up on her face, and her heart warming up instantly.
She told him about how she was only feeling unwell because she was worried about certain things, and how she’d love nothing else but to go on the date with him, jumping up IMMEDIATELY, to get prepared.
They walked out of the house, and chose to drive out in Amarachi’s car, because Ben didn’t want anyone telling where he was, until he had been able to face the menàce called Mandy.
They sat in a fancy restaurant, talking and smiling over a generous lunch, but both of them had their thoughts and worries.
Ben was worried about how Amarachi would react, if he tried to push beyond the friendship they now had.
He had always known that she liked him a great deal, but with him having had the entanglement he had with Mandy, he wasn’t so sure that things could be cool between them again.
And while he was thinking about how things could turn out if he asked Amarachi to allow them take their relationship to an intimate note, she was thinking about what she’d do, if they ended that date without as much as a sign that he’d ever want her.
“Amara, do you still recall the first time we spoke? I was supervising a punishment the math teacher gave members of your class, and I saw how unable you were to serve the punishment, because you were already sweating so bãdly” he asked her, choosing to take her down to memory lane, to see her reaction to memories of how she had once been all over him, and understand, her current mindset.
“Yeah, like hêll, I do! You pulled me out from the others and asked me to squat beside you, rather than remain among my classmates, who were frog jumping” Amarachi replied, smiling sheepishly.
She went on to tell him about how she had looked for him everywhere after that day, to tell him she loved him, and how beaten she was, when he told her, she was too young to know what love was all about
“I guess I was too young then to know what love is, and probably grew too old to be loved, when I finally found you, after so many years again.
“It just goes to tell how unfortunate one can be when he or she falls in love with someone who’s not interested in him or her” Amarachi said tersely, before she lifted a glass of juice to her lips again.
“And I’d say, you’re wrong my dear. See, I may not exactly be a man with many fancy words, but I know I fell helplessly in love with you, the moment I set my eyes on you, in that field, where you served the punishment with your classmates.
“I fought so hard to keep my feeling under check, because of your age, and had to fight more, when you told me you love me.
“It wasn’t very easy to fight you off, to take your hands off me, each time you tried to hold me, when all I wanted then, was to hug and kiss you, with every fiber of my being.
“But I had to keep you off, I had to run away from you, because I was afraid of leading you on, making you fall deeper in love with me, when you were yet to know what exactly you want in a man.
“I didn’t want to spoil your chances of being with the man that’ll be suitable for you, just because you stepped into a wrong relationship when you were barely able to tell what an ideal man should look like” Ben said, recounting how difficult it had been for him, to stay away from her when she was way too young for a relationship.
Then he told her about how he had been so distraught, when they lost contact, and he couldn’t reach her again.
“And for some reasons, I had to find you on the very day I fell victîm of a crafty woman, after so many years of being unable to have anything to do with any woman, making me so afraid to ask you to be mine, because I keep wondering if you won’t judge me too harshly to give me a chance, ever again.
“But Amarachi, how would I know if you would say yes, if I don’t ask? How can I tell if you will give me a chance to be your man, if I don’t try?
“Would you be my girlfriend Amara? Will you let us be together, for as long as it takes us to decide to take it to another level?” been asked Amarachi, making her nearly choke on the drink she had in her mouth.
“You know I love you Ben. And yes, I will be your girlfriend, because I have been waiting since forever, to have you ask me” she told him, tears of joy, rolling down her face, as he gave her a big hug.
They were still celebrating their eventual coming together, laughing happily, and looking into each other’s eyes, to show their deep rooted love, when a burly dude, walked into the section of the restaurant they were sitting, with two other boys.
They sat really close to them, and must have imagined that they were too consumed with their live talks to notice them, or they just didn’t care that the were there, because they began to discuss about a job the burly man, had for them, in low tones.
“I don’t know why you are double checking us again boss. We have been your foremost gunmèn, and never have we failed in a mission before.
“We have his address, and all the details we need. We have been monitoring him for some days now, and we already know his regular itinerary, so it won’t be a big deal to decide when to hit” one of the boys said.
“Yes boss, Sparrow is right! There isn’t a single mission we have failed before. In the last mission where Sparrow and I had to take off a bride and the groom, Sparrow was meant to take off the bride, while I focused on the groom.
“We did our bit as quickly and easily as we had planned, but there were witnesses, and we didn’t need anyone to tell us that it is against your modus operandi to leave any witnesses.
“Sparrow and I wiped them all out boss! We delivered clean, just like we have always done!” Dark Angel said proudly.
Stone agreed with them,hut gave them extra instructions, telling them when and how to enter the house, practically laying out the steps of the operation.
They were talking in whispers, but Ben who had the habit of wearing a special device that made him get amplified sounds, whenever he was in a public place, was able to hear them loud and clear.
He continued to act busy with Amarachi, while he listened to the guys make final plans for the night.
The boys left after their boss concluded his briefing, and asked them to go get ready for the night.
He sat back and ordered for a fat meal, after a girl he invited joined him on the table.
Ben smiled to himself, as he heard the man asking the girl to eat whatever she wanted because he was celebrating the success of a project.
He left the restaurant with Amarachi much later, completely equipped with all the information he needed to be the hero for the night.
