Joe rushed to the hospital that morning to see his mother. Farida had insisted on going with him, even when he tried to make her stay at home, to avoid issues with the hospital management.
He knocked and opened the door to the private ward only to find his mother sitting on her bed and talking with the nurses.
One of his sister’s who had been sitting outside the ward, walked in with him. She had been barred from entering the room, he was told, but as soon as she saw her brother, she decided to go in with him.
“Amarachi, please come and sit besides me, I have something important to tell you” Mama beckoned on her daughter who had been in the hospital since the first streak of daylight and had made arrangements to secure her mother.
Joe looked up at the nurse on duty, more like to get a go ahead nod, and was told that they’d still have to get an approval from the MD.
She made a call, and was told that Mama’s daughter could be allowed to see her mother, but a nurse always has to be on standby, whether mama was receiving a visitor or not.
Amarachi walked over to the bed and sat besides her mother. She was doing everything she could, not to let what was going on in her mind show on her face.
Very late the previous night, Nkem called her to inform her of what was going on with her mother, and she had nearly run màd when she go the details.
“Amara, you know mama and I haven’t been the best of friends for quite a while, but she’s my mother-in-law, after all, so I can’t seem to rest when I know she is in dangêr.
“I know all that I have gone through in her hands, and I also know that the very reason she turned the way she became to me is because of her desire to hold Joe’s child in her arms.
“I became despêrate to ensure that the woman she married for Joe didn’t turn out to be the one who gives him a heir, and I had to arrange for my friend’s daughter to give him a child, who’d be given to me for adoption, and enable me save my marriage” Nkem told Amarachi.
“Wait, are you saying it was your plan all along to get that girl for my brother? You got a girl with a beautiful and youthful body for your husband?” Amarachi asked her sister in-law, flabbergasted.
“What would I have done? I didn’t know it was going to turn out this way. How could I have known that I would even get my own miracle so soon, or hat Mandy could be this dèvilish?
“You know how many times you have had to fìght mama over her insistence to bring women into my house
“Joe stood by me all along, but mama managed to get the kinsmen to perform the traditional marriage rites for Martha and brought her home.
“With Mama’s love and support for her, you know I would have been thrown out of the house the very moment she got pregnant, so I had to do what I did” Nkem explained.
“Oh, and you’re in your husband’s house now, right?” Amarachi asked her in pure sarcasm.
“Hmmm! That story is for another time my dear. But please, I called you this night because mama is lying in a critical condition.
“And I learnt Joe doesn’t want to tell any of you, because he is worried about how you’ll react when you see her in that condition.
“I would have let things go the way he wants, but Joe is totally oblivious of the deàdly game going on around him
“I went to see mama today, and if I had arrived a second later, we would have lost mama…” Nkem was still saying when Amarachi screàmed.
“Tufikwa! (God forbid)” Amarachi thundered.
Nkem gave her a detailed run down of what happened and how it happened, and why she thinks Mama’s life could still be in dangêr.
They agreed that it would be best for Amarachi to go to the hospital, since she was Mama’s biological child, but when Amarachi got to the hospital, she was also denied access to the room.
“The room is out of bounds to visitors for now ma’am. We need to strictly monitor mama until she regains consciousness” the nurse had told Amarachi politely.
Amarachi thanked the nurse understandingly, and left the ward to do other things.
She needed to see one or two people in the hospital and make her own researches, so she went in search of the guy in charge of the hospital’s CCTV cameras.
“The footages should be able to tell me what happened” Amarachi was saying, and nearly bumped into the person coming out of the guy’s office that had been pitch black since she got to the hospital, and had to systematically duck, when she recognized Mandy.
Mandy walked down the hallway and towards her car. Amarachi watched her until she got into her car and drove off, before she knocked on the door.
“Ben? You’re the one here?” Amarachi asked, shocked to see Ben, her secondary school, senior prefect and first crush.
They were in secondary school together, and even though they were just a class apart, Ben told her she was too young to imagine that she loved someone.
He had helped her with math and physics assignments, but made sure they remained platonic friends until they lost contacts
She knew he was science inclined and had pursued a degree in computer engineering, but she didn’t know he worked with that hospital.
“What are you doing here my little love?” He asked her, pretending not to know what brought her to the hospital, when in fact, he nearly ran màd, after he learnt that the woman in the ward that Mandy had targeted, was Joe’s mother, which made her Amarachi’s mother.
Amarachi asked him for help, telling him how someone had made an attempt at her mother, and how afraid she was, that she could still be at risk.
He told her the much he could about her mother being safe now, but couldn’t bring himself to tell her that he had almost kïlled her mother himself, or letting her see the glitched footages.
“The footages for that ward and a few others are actually a total mess now, and can’t be of any use, but rest assured my little love,mama is safe now” he’d told her.
Amarachi made him show her a view of what was going on with her mother inside the ward, and was only able to go home after he told her how strict the hospital was going to be to see her mother get well.
He walked her to her car, and she was about to get in when she asked the question.
“So you’ve always preferred older women? The reason you never gave us a chance was because you didn’t like people younger than you?” she asked, and Ben’s brows knitted in anguish.
He gritted his teeth, but didn’t say a word, just looked up the sky, and blew out cold air, with his two hands buried in the front pocket of his denim pants.
“It’s okay, I got it! People have their choices and the reason they do the things they do, but you may want to be careful with that woman.
“She used to be my brother’s wife’s friend. Now I do not know what she has done with her own marriage, but I know like hêll that she has managed to ruin her friend’s own, and installed her daughter as my brother’s wife!
“I don’t like people like her, because they can do anything to get what they want. Goodnight Ben” she said, and got into her car and made to go, but been screàmed suddenly, startling her.
“Why am I so unfortunate? How could I have been waiting for this day, only for it to come when I have become so dirty? How could I have waited for so long to find you again, only for that êvïl, scheming and terrible woman to make me this dirty and undeserving of you?” He asked in tears, realizing who Mandy was, and why she had to do what she did
Ben gave Amarachi a complete rundown of everything that had happened, and it annoyed Amarachi to no ends to realize that someone as smart as Ben didn’t know that Mandy had used an àphrodisiac on him
They made a proper analysis of everything and summised that mama knew something Mandy didn’t want anyone to hear, so she wanted her out of the way.
So as Amarachi was looking at Farida snuggling so close to her brother that morning, a thousand and one things. Ame to her mind, but she chose to work with the plan she had hatched with Ben
