I was at the public tap waiting and hoping that violet would come to fetch water so that I could see her. However, she seemed not to have any plans of coming. I was getting frustrated but didn’t know what to do. I was not alone at the tap, I had come there with my neighbour’s son, Chris. He was about ten years old but very smart. I decided I would ask Chris to go to her neighbourhood and see if he could catch a glimpse of her. However, I was spared from doing that because I saw her coming from a distance. She was wearing a sexy mini skirt and a fitting T shirt.
“Good evening, Violet.” I said as soon as she reached the tap.
“Good evening.”
“I thought you would never come. I was getting worried.”
“What do you mean by that?” She asked. “We had no plans of meeting.”
“Never mind.” I said. “The important thing is that you are here.”
She eyed me suspiciously from the corner of her eyes and then proceeded to fill her container. When she was done, I continued.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Yes.”
“You know I like you, don’t you?”
“I have noticed.”
“I am hoping that you should like me, too.” I ventured.
“Hmm!!”
“Please say something.”
“What do you really want?” She asked, staring at me straight in the eyes, her hands at akimbo.
“I was hoping, I mean I want you to be my girl.” I told her.
“You really want that?” She asked, her head in a curious angle.
“I do, you are such a beautiful girl. You are also very kind. Please don’t say no.” I urged.
“Are you in any relationship?” She asked.
“Nope, in just a few days, I will be seventeen. How could I possibly be in a relationship?”
“What if I get pregnant?”
“We will be careful, please just say yes.”
“Alright, I agree. I will be your girlfriend.”
I was very happy that she had finally accepted. She claimed to be single but deep in me, I knew I had just snatched a village guy’s babe and it might be the beginning of trouble for me. Since it was dark, we had our first kiss and then separated. The next day, I couldn’t wait to see her again. I sent Chris to go tell her that I would love to see her later in the day. However, she told Chris to tell me that she was not available. She said she would send for me when the coast is clear.
It had been a month now and we had been seeing each other almost every three days. We hadn’t made love yet. We just met, spoke, hugged, kissed and left. One day, my mum sent me to go give food to a relative of ours who had been admitted to the hospital. I was passing through a ward when someone called me. I halted momentarily to see who was calling and I noticed it was one of my former class mates. His name was Nelson and he was now a village guy.
“Good afternoon, Romeo.”
“Good afternoon, Nelson. What is wrong with you? Why are you in a hospital bed?” I asked.
“I was involved in a bike accident. I didn’t take it seriously, hoping the pains would subside. However, it got serious and I had to be brought here. Anyway, that’s not why I called you. I heard you have been seeing my girlfriend. Please, let her go. I can’t drag her with you. I know you students have an upper hand and a fair advantage.”
“Who are you talking about?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.
“I am talking about Violet. She belongs to me, please.”
“Oh!!, Violet? That one? Forget her na, bro. I own her now. You are in the hospital and you should be thinking about getting better and not about a woman; a woman who has already left you.” I said, laughing.
“It’s not fair what you guys do.” He said, angrily. “You come to the village during the holiday, get the girls pregnant with your empty pockets and big English, then go back and leave us to take care of the pregnancies.”
“Boy, forget. Go and tell that to the girls. They love city guys and by the way, no one is getting pregnant here. We are not as careless as you, village guys.
I left his hospital bedside and went home. At about 7:00 PM, I was sitting in front of our house with my sisters and other neighbours when I seemed to notice someone like Violet pacing on the road. She seemed to be looking for a way to get my attention. However, I wasn’t very sure she was the one so, I kept my cool. About fifteen minutes later, a friend of mine called Eric, who was also a city guy came to our house and told me that Violet wanted to see me.
I left the house excitedly and went to the roadside to meet her. We met in a tight embrace.
“I wasn’t expecting you. What are you doing here? It’s late and you can run into trouble back home.” I was worried.
“Calm down Mr. Man. I was missing you and decided to come and see you. Is that a wrong thing for me to do?” She asked, slightly irritated.
“No, it’s alright, as long as it is fine with you.”
I noticed that she wanted something. For her to have taken that kind of a risk to leave their strict home at night, just to come and see me meant she wanted something. I held her hand and pulled her towards me. She came without any hesitation. Our mouths met in a kiss and I liked the scent of her breath. It was very fresh. I wanted to make love to her and I know she badly wanted it too. However, we were both still teenagers and still lived with family. We had no convenient place to carry out our affairs. So, what were we going to do?
I remembered that a lumber had felled a tree behind our house and there was an abundance of saw dust there. I decided that that would serve nicely as a bed. I took her hand and led her towards that place. There was a faint moon shining overhead, providing just enough light for us to make our way through the bushy footpath. When we got there, I pulled her close and removed her blouse.
