???????? Birthday Present Part Eight:
The address too me to a lively village on the outskirts of the state. I wondered how I was going to locate the shop in an environment like this and to make matters uncomfortable for me I was in an Uber (because I still feared using my car that was now out of the mechanic) So I couldn’t be flexible with my movements.
The Uber man was patient and helpful as he helped me ask pedestrians for directions.
After an hour we finally got to the place. It was a small shabby shop that screamed i-was-here-before-you-were-even-born.
I paid the Uber driver and sent a quick text to my husband telling him I had arrived at the place.
A teenage girl ran out of the shop laughing and blended into the busy street, A short round man came out of the shop shouting after her. It took him a while to realize that I was standing there.
“You wan buy anything?” He ushered me inside the shop. I showed him the purple cardboard and he examined it.
“My wife made these pendants” He said thoughtfully.
“Can I speak to your wife?” I inquired enthusiastically.
“No” he muttered still looking at the cardboard then he faced me. “She’s dead”
“Oh” my hopes were slowly getting destroyed.
“She made so many of these when she was alive” he continued as if I had not said anything, his focus was back on the purple cardboard.
“She wanted to own a jewelery brand ( he gave a sad laugh) the last one was sold two months ago” he went behind the counter.
Hephzibah’s birthday was two months ago and the whoever bought the last one could probably be the one who sent the gift.
That is who I should be looking for, the person that bought the last pendant.
“Can I keep this?” The man asked referring to the cardboard.
“Yeah you can. Do you know the person that bought the last pendant?” I asked, hoping with everything in me that he gave me answer I needed.
“Yes she is from around here” he said leaving the counter.
My hope was returning and it was hard for me to control my excitement.
“Can you tell me where she lives” I was already searching for a pen and paper in my bag.
“I no fit give you that kind information” the man switched back to pidgin, my face fell.
“Why” I struggled to ask because anger was surging.
“Comot from this place if you no wan buy anything” He said in a tone that had finality all over it.
I left his shop confused of what to do next. I ordered another Uber cause that one had already left.
“I fit show you the place” a smart voice said behind me. It was the same girl that ran out of the shop.
“Eh?”
“I can show you the house of the woman you are looking for” she said clearly.
“Are you serious” I blurted out unable to hide my excitement but my unnecessary happiness irritated her as she gave me a dirty look.
“But you go give me money”
“How much” I brought my purse out of my bag.
“3k” she said.
“3k is too much na”
“You de pay abi you no de pay?”
I reluctantly gave her the money and she showed me the woman’s house. It was getting late and I preferred to do whatever confrontation I wanted to do in the day time.
I got home and told my husband about my findings and he in turn told me that he had found a pastor who could pray for Hephzibah and he arranged for the man to come to the house (we still didn’t trust Hephzibah enough to leave her room).
I was skeptical about it but he assured me that the man wasn’t like the Prophet. I was still skeptical but beggar no get choice and we need all the help we could get.
I went to the woman’s house the next day, I texted my husband as usual informing him that I was safe and put my phone inside my jean pocket.
I knocked on the iron door and a small lady not older than forty came out wearing an Ankara gown. For a moment she reminded me of someone.
I told her that I wanted to speak to her and she let me in. The house was size of my room and I couldn’t help but notice a small altar at the corner of the parlor with little carved figures of deities.
“So you are the woman” she smiled dangerously after I had told her my business. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat not knowing how to respond.
“First of all I must thank you for what you have done, your actions were evil but I must thank you for what your actions caused”
“I am confused” I announced.
“Do you remember Nimi?” She asked.
“Nimi” I rolled the name over and over again on my lips. I knew Nimi was the name of the necklace but who is Nimi.
I pondered on this for a while, opening old memories then everything made sense. The reason why this woman reminded me of someone was because she looked like the older version of Nimi.
My former maid.
