???? A Daughter’s Revenge EPISODE FIFTY TWO:
Moments later, Tunde came back and handed Martha the package. About five wraps.
In return, Martha still tipped him.
‘Tuale! Mama! E sure for you!..’, Tunde was hailing her. Even after she had left, he was still standing still like a soldier, with hands raised up in the air, hailing her.
????????HOME????????
Martha got home and Aunty Ifeoma happened not to be around. Martha herself has forgotten that Aunty Ifeoma had earlier informed her that she would be going to Ikorodu for inspection of land.
Thompson wanted to acquire an acre of land in Ikorodu. And since it was all Aunty Ifeoma’s idea, Thompson allowed Aunty Ifeoma to champion the whole process with his lawyer while he was away from Lagos to attend his building project in Asaba and village.
Martha locked herself up in her room, crying bitterly, smoking and drinking.
Meanwhile she had blocked KC in all possible channels he could use to communicate to her. But even at that, KC was still using different phone numbers, calling to apologize. While Martha kept blocking whichever strange phone number he used to call or text her.
Martha really took the wèèd and alcohol excessively. To the extent she slept off.
It was already 6:00pm when Aunty Ifeoma returned home. She was very surprised to see her entrance door open.
‘Ah! What happened? I locked this door before leaving the house this morning. So how come?,’ she was contemplating. ‘Whose hand work could that be? Martha? No! She should be in the shop by now…’, she was asking herself all these questions amid great confusion.
Aunty Ifeoma also had a thought that her apartment had been burgled. But to her uttermost surprise, nothing was missing inside the house, not even a pin, after a thorough check.
Moments later, she began to perceive some strange smell. ‘What’s smelling in this house? ‘, she asked herself, sniffing around like a pig. ‘It’s smelling like wéèd,’ she paused amid confusion. ‘But I have no smoker in this house. So how come every nook and cranny of this house is smelling wèèd wèèd?.’
Aunty Ifeoma kept sniffing around until she traced the whole thing to Martha’s room.
She was very shocked to find out that the smell was emanating from Martha’s room. At first, she thought that hoodlums had broken into Martha’s room, smoking. Fear them gripped her. She was about to scream for help when she overheard Martha coughing out loud.
Martha!
Martha!!
Martha!!!
She screamed her name.
But no one answered.
She began to hit her door vigorously while still shouting her name. Still yet, no one responded.
Just then, it dawned on Aunty Ifeoma that she had a spare key to the room. So she ran to her room, ransacking everywhere looking for the spare keys.
Fortunately, she later found the keys after almost turning her room upside down.
As she finally opened Martha’s room with the spare keys, lol and behold, look at Martha lying almost lifeless on the ground.
Aunty Ifeoma shedded tears having realized that Martha was the one smoking in the house. As ashes and an unsmoked wrap of wèèd littered her room including a big bottle of unfinished alcoholic drink.
Martha lied down in the pool of her unpleasant smelling vomit, snoring heavily. Aunty Ifeoma needed no seer to tell her that Martha was very high on wèèd and alcohol.
Martha, wake up!
What’s wrong with you?
Wake up!
What happened?
She screamed, shaking Martha effortlessly on the verge of waking her up from her slumber. But all to no avail as Martha was very deep asleep.
Aunty Ifeoma had to clean Martha up first. Then tidy up everywhere. Before the long wait for her to finally wake up from her slumber.
Martha came back to consciousness almost midnight. It was at exactly 11:55 pm she finally woke up, only to see Aunty Ifeoma sitting beside her on the bed.
‘Nne, you are awake?,’ Aunty Ifeoma asked in a soft voice.
‘I am sorry..’, Martha managed to mutter amid severe headaches, tiredness and tears.
‘My daughter, what happened? When did you become a smoker?,’she asked, in a cool voice.
‘Aunty, my heart is broken. My heart is shattered into pieces. I have lost my sanity. I am totally insane. So I resorted for solace in them. I am sorry..’ Martha apologized, crying.
‘Nne m, no matter what the problem is, alcohol or wèèd is never a solution. If you drink or smoke as an escape from problems, you would wake up only to realize that the problems are still there staring you in the face. All these things are not good for you. You cannot solve a problem with wèèd and alcohol. Instead, you create more problems for yourself,’ she paused. ‘My daughter, what happened? Talk to me, please,’ Aunty Ifeoma curiously asked.
‘It’s Kelechi. I caught him today with another woman. Aunty KC has been cheating on me after all I did to him. KC has broken my heart. He has finally shattered my heart ..,’ Martha was saying in tears.
Aunty Ifeoma giggled. ‘My daughter, is that why you want to destroy your life with all these?,’ she asked, pointing at the wèèd and alcoholic drink. ‘Look, the worst thing to do in life is to turn to alcohol so as to escape from problems. Because alcohol or smoke doesn’t have the ability to solve problems effectively. Alcohol may provide temporary relief from stress, anxiety, or emotional pain, creating a short-lived escape. However, the underlying issues remain unresolved. So the only way of solving a problem is by addressing the core roots of the problem,’ she paused. ‘Look, in a relationship, you have to be ready for the worst. Kelechi broke your heart is not a warrant for you to sentence yourself to death. What has happened, has happened. What you should be thinking of doing now is how to stand up on your feet, pick up the pieces and move on. Life had to continue…’
‘Aunty, do you think it’s easy to just let go just like that?..’, Martha asked amid great tears.
‘My daughter, I know it’s not easy. But you have to try and let go. It has happened, it has happened. You cannot continue this way. You cannot because Kelechi broke your heart and destroyed your life. So no matter what, life has to move on..’
‘Aunty, how could he do this to me? How could he pay me back this way? After all I did to him? How could he go about sleeping with my friend, Linda?..’, Martha was asking, shedding tears in a heartbroken manner .
‘That’s what you get when you give your heart to an ingrate,’ she drew Martha closer and leaned her head on her bosom. ‘My daughter, please stop crying. Take heart. As the fall of a man is not the end of his life..’, she consoled her.
Aunty Ifeoma began when Martha had stopped crying: ‘Nne m, what exactly happened?’.
‘Aunty, I went to Oshodi to deliver goods to my very big customer…’
Martha narrated the whole thing without leaving any stone unturned. She bursted into tears again as the whole thing became green in her head again.
‘My daughter, stop crying. Don’t cry like one who doesn’t have hope again in life. Like I said before, the fall of a man is not the end of his life. I know how much KC meant to you. I know very well you see the future with him. I know how much you have sacrificed to make him who he’s today. But since it has to end this way, you have to accept your fate in good faith. As God works in very mysterious ways. Look, at times in life, you have to meet the wrong people before meeting the right person. And secondly, every relationship must not end up in marriage.’
Aunty Ifeoma paused.
‘My daughter, my son Thompson, the other day, told me that he’s in love with you. And he wants to settle down with you. I told him that I wouldn’t be the one wooing a wife for him. That if he knows what his heart wants, he should go all out for it. He should fight hard for it..,’ she sighed. ‘Nne m, everything happens for a purpose. What’s happening now is nothing but fate. And as a mother who has the interest of her daughter at heart, I will advise you give Thompson a chance in your life. Stop scaring him away for a man who doesn’t value you in his life..’
‘Aunty, I don’t think I will love a man again. As love is very wîçkèd. If I came out of this, I am done with love. I am done with men. I will never have anything to do with men again in my life. I don’t think I will ever give any man my heart again in my life…’, Martha stated.
To Be Continued…
