SUNDAY AFTERNOON
I was on my way back from church when my phone rang.
I reluctantly took a look to know who the caller was. Lo and behold, it was Kelechi.
I picked up the call.
‘Hello KC, happy Sunday’, I said.
‘Martha, there is nothing happy about today’, he sounded so distressed.
‘KC what’s the problem?’, I had to ask with curiosity. Because it was very obvious all was not well with him.
‘My dear, I am very màd right now. My head is on fire. I am going insàñe..’
‘KC calm down and talk to me. What’s the problem with you?’, I asked amid worry and confusion.
‘This is not a matter of phone. Where are you? We need to see. Please let’s see before I run màd’, he angrily said.
‘Okay, okay…where do you want us to see?..’
‘Just find somewhere and wait for me. I am coming to Cement right now’, he added.
‘Okay, I am waiting for you. Just put yourself together, please’, I pleaded with him.
‘I will try..I will try’, he said.
‘It’s okay, ehn? I am waiting for you at the Bush Bar. Meet me there let me know what the problem is’, I said to him.
‘Okay’, he said and ended the call.
I had to change the plan. I didn’t go home straight from church. I had to divert and wait for him at the joint. Because he was not coming from far. He was coming from Dopemu.
It wasn’t long, KC walked into the joint. He looked so tattered and distressed.
I waved at him and he came and joined me. He met me while taking a bottle of malt.
‘KC what’s wrong with you?’, I asked.
‘My sister and her husband are playing with me’, he angrily voiced out.
‘I don’t understand. What’s the problem?’, I asked.
‘Martha, I have not told you this before. But I think it’s the right time to let you know how my sister and her husband have been so wîçkèd to me,’ he sighed. ‘As you already know, I left Abuja about six years ago to come and learn trade here in Lagos. I was into furniture back then in Abuja. That was my handwork. But at one point, things were not moving well for me. To the extent I hardly see möñèy to even eat, not to talk of paying my rents and other bills. It was my sister who was sending môñèy for me to be eating. As things kept getting worse everyday, my sister convinced me to come down to Lagos and learn trade from her husband. That they will help me start up my own business after I must have mastered the trade. I thought about it and finally decided to give it a shot. I sold off my shop and all my working tools and came down to Lagos,’ he hissed and shook his head In anger and regret. ‘But at one point, I made the worst mistake of my life. I fell so easily to the deceit of my sister and her husband. It all started when my sister found out I had some möñèy with me. The two connived and deceived me to the extent I transferred all my savings to them. They promised to add up to the môñèy so as to open a business for me when I must have mastered the nooks and crannies of the trade,’ he paused, shaking and boiling in anger. ‘ Anytime I talk to them about starting a business for me, my sister and her husband keep giving me flimsy excuses. I am going seven years with them and the same story they keep telling me everyday. And the worst part is that I accosted them this morning that if they cannot open the business again for me, at least they should give me back my money. Five hundred thousand naira Is not a small môñèy. Do you know what my sister’s husband asked me? He asked me if I knew how much food I had consumed in his house. That I should never in any day of my life make mention of that môñèy again..’
‘This is serious..’, I exclaimed.
‘I have been in a loggerhead with them since morning. In fact, I locked up the gate. I told them that there would be no church service for them until they provide my möñèy,’ he had to pause before continuing: ‘Although my sister’s husband managed to escape leaving his wife and children behind. She has been pleading with me since morning. That shameless man even asked me to leave his house. I told him that I would leave once he gave me my môñèy..’
‘KC, you have to calm down first..’
‘Martha, look at me, I am not getting younger anymore. For how long do I have to wait before these people get the fact that time is ticking against me. Even if they don’t want to open the business for me again, let them give me my môñèy. Let me use the môñèy to make myself useful. The môñèy can get me a halfshop inside this market. ‘KC, I understand how bad you are feeling right now. But I want you to put yourself together first. Please calm yourself down and..’
‘Ohmmm…Martha, stop telling me to calm down because I have been calming down all these years. You see tonight, that house will not contain us. I will do something stûpîd to show them I mean it this time around. In fact, that house will go up in flames if they fail to give me my money..’
‘KC, violence doesn’t solve anything. Instead, it creates more problems. No problem can be worked out by creating another. I think you have to involve people in this issue. You can let your mother know. Let her talk to your sister and her husband. I am not in support of this. This is a typical example of sending a child on an errand with a bucket of salt and at the same time invoking rain to beat the child..’
‘Martha, I have been patient enough. And for that îdîôt to have the guts to call me on phone to tell me that he doesn’t want to come back and meet me in his house, then, between two things, one must happen tonight. I called him, thinking he would come back, but he refused to listen to me.
Before I could stand up to look for him, KC was nowhere to be found. I tried calling his phone, but he refused to pick it up.
I became very worried. KC I know doesn’t get angry so easily. So for him to be this angry, that means he has endured it enough.
My fear was for him to not do something stûpîd. Something that would land him into trouble. Something that he would regret for the rest of his life.
I kept calling his phone but he refused to pick. The only thing he did was to switch off the phone.
That night, I couldn’t sleep. As I was praying for him not to use violence to cause more problems for himself.
But the following day, my fear finally came to pass.
It happened that KC allowed the dèvîl to use and dumped him. He did something stûpîd that night and it landed him into big trouble..
